In case you don’t know, Blue Like Jazz is a mega-selling book written in 2003 by American author Don Miller. The book’s tag-line is ‘Non-Religious Thoughts on Christian Spirituality’ and chronicles the author’s wrestling with issues of faith and institutionalization of Christianity.
The film of the book was due to start later this year, but according to a Sept. 16th post on Miller’s blog, the project was going to be canned due to lack of funding.
Enter Zach and John:
I haven’t actually read the book so I’ll reserve judgment regarding whether the film is worthy of being salvaged, but Zach and John’s undertaking is a great example of the strength of crowd-sourcing and using social media to facilitate this.
Zach and John’s campaign is tight. Not only have they got banners and all sorts of cool things to for you to add to your blog to spread the word, they are also creating an added incentive by curating the work of bloggers* in a Blue Like Jazz Word Tour page. Furthermore, as the ‘Save Blue Like Jazz’ story continues to spread, the SBLJ team are encouraging supporters to use the digital aggregation service Digg to raise the profile of SBLJ articles.
So far, there efforts have managed to raise over $70,000 in 5 days. Such is the power of social marketing!!
